A Blanket for Baby Jesus

 Baby’s love their blankies, so we’re making a blanket to give to the baby Jesus.  The kids will have lots of fun designing a blanket for Jesus and then tucking Jesus inside.  There are patterns included for both the blanket (no designs in the blanket) and the baby.  Depending on how much time you have to finish a project, you may choose to have the kids draw in the baby Jesus’ face.  You can just use white-out on the pattern before making copies for your class.

Supplies:

• White construction paper
• Blanket (Pattern)
• Baby Jesus (Pattern)
• Black construction paper to use for background
• Crayons, colored pencils or colored markers
• Scissors
• Glue stick
• White charcoal pencil
• Craft knife
• Black Sharpie

Directions:

1. Make copies of the blanket and baby Jesus.
2. Draw patches and designs inside the blanket.  Use your imagination for different prints.  Put examples, of prints, on the board to give the kids ideas.
3. Add color to the designs.  I used colored markers for the project example, but crayons or colored pencils could also be used.  I used a black Sharpie to outline the patches and to add stitch lines around the edges of the patches.
4. Color the baby Jesus.
5. Carefully cut out the blanket and the baby.  If the kids are old enough to use a craft knife (otherwise the teacher should do this), cut along the dashed lines between the halo and the blanket.
6. ATTN:  When gluing the blanket to the black construction paper follow these directions carefully.  Apply glue to the back of the halo.  Then only apply glue to the outside edges of the blanket.  The top edge of the blanket stays open so the baby can be slipped inside.
7. With the white charcoal pencil write a Christmas message along the outside of the bundled up Baby Jesus.
