Kate Mawdsley, artist, is the inspiration for this project. Her animal paintings are so simple and colorful. This is a good project to get the kids to draw large; to fill the paper. I cut paper so it measured 4 ½” x 12″ to reproduce the proportions of Kate”s art. I searched Kate Mawdsley on Google images and made a copy of her animal prints for the kids to reference. I printed six pictures on a page and cut them apart so each student would have a picture. The kids loved this project and you can see what great results were achieved. Supplies: 
- Drawing or construction paper cut 4 ½” x 12″
- Assorted colors of 9″ x 12″ construction paper
- Copy of Kate Mawdsley’s animal art (one per student)
- Pencil and eraser
- Black Sharpie
- Color crayons
- Glue stick
Directions:
- Give each child two sheets of the cut drawing paper. Let the students choose the animal they want to draw. Discuss proportion and filling the paper with the drawing.
- With the pencil, the student draws a version of the animal. Then outlines the pencil lines with a black Sharpie.
- Color the background of the drawing, and the animal, in colors of the students choosing.
- Help the student choose a colored background paper to accent the colors in their art and glue the picture to the background.
