Milagros is a Spanish word for “miracle†or “surprise,†and for many years the little charms have been used in prayer petitions and in thanksgiving. They are made mainly from bone, wood, silver, gold or tin and shaped to represent the prayer petition. They are shaped as books, animals, body parts or even a person’s name. The charms are attached to a cross, an altar, a wall of a church or to a statue of a saint. They can be found though out Latin America.
The Milagros is a little charm that represent a prayer petition. The Milagros is shaped to resemble that which the prayer is being requested.  For example, if you are praying for someone who has a broken leg, the Milagros might be in the shape of a crutch or a leg.  Another example is: If your request is to heal a broken relationship, or for someone who has had a heart attack, the image could be shaped as a heart. Holy medals or images can also be used.
Supplies:
- Two paint sticks
- Craft paint
- Artist brush
- Hot glue gun
- Buttons, religious images, small charms
- Paper, clay, foil, etc. to make charms
- Cut one of the paint sticks to measure 8†(I used the straight end)
- Center and glue the short stick 7 ½†up from the bottom of the full stick.
- Choose buttons, religious images from Christian magazines, catalogs or greeting cards for your Milagros. Make sure that they aren’t too large because you’ll want to attach a lot of them to your cross.
- If making this during the Lenten season, attach one Milagros a day and say a pray of petition.
As a Lenten Milagros Cross: Make a cross using paint sticks, cardboard, wood etc.  Gather together buttons, charms or little images for your Milagros, or make charms out of clay, foil, cloth or paper. Check for small items around your house that symbolize a prayer request. Each day during Lent attach one of the Milagros and recite the prayer below. In 40 days you will have your cross laden with prayer offerings of requests or thanksgiving.
Heavenly Father, please help me to follow you in faithfulness during this season of Lent. I thank you for loving me so much that you were willing to suffer and die on the cross. Today, as I attach this Milagros to the cross, I ask that you accept my petition for this day,____________________, and grant it according to Your will, in the name of Jesus, our Lord and Savior. Amen. (Our Father, who art in heaven….etc.)
