Georgia O’Keefe Flowers

We used calendar pictures of flowers for inspiration and guidance in this project. Here are just two of the many beautiful works of art the class produced.

Supplies:

  • Calendar pictures of close up flowers
  • Assorted colors of construction paper
  • Assorted colors of 12″ x 18″ paper
  • Pencil and eraser
  • Black marker
  • Oil pastels

Directions:

  1. Choose a calendar picture for your project. With the picture in mind, choose a background paper. (If the background of the picture is light colored, choose a light colored paper for the background.)
  2. Lightly draw the flower onto the background. Be sure to use the whole page. Notice how BIG the flowers are. You may want to start in the center to get a feel for the size. Watch where leaves overlap.
  3.  Start to fill in the flower or flowers with the oil pastels. Use color to shade the pedals.  Use white pastel where you see highlights and blend with your finger. Use brown or black to darken some of the colors. Blend the colors. The full page must be covered with oil pastel!!
  4. Choose a 12″ x 18″ sheet that complements your art for a border.
