Batik is the name for a technique of dyeing fabrics. First, melted wax is applied on the areas of the fabric that is not to be colore
Then the fabric is soaked in dye the wax prevents the dye from penetrating onto the fabric where it was applied and therefore that area of the fabric stays the original color.
For our version of batik, we will be using coffee filters as the fabric and crayons for the wax. The crayons also give color to the area under the wax, the area that is usually being protected from the future dye.
Supplies:
- White coffee filter
- Black Sharpie
- Crayons
- Water paints and brush
- Tinfoil
- Paper towel
- 7 ¾” circle of white paper
- 8″ square of colored construction paper
- 9″ x 12″ black construction paper
- Glue stick
Directions:
- With the black Sharpie, draw an image on the white coffee filter
- Deeply color the image with the crayons. Shade where appropriate with a darker shade of color.
- Paint over the entire coffee filter with one or more colors of water paint. I found this works best with a piece of tinfoil under the filter while painting.
- Lay the filter on a paper towel to soak up excess water. Lay flat to dry.
- When dry, glue the filter to the white circle. Then the circle onto an eight inch colored piece of construction paper.
- Center the colored paper onto the black background sheet and glue.
