This project is suitable for any time of year, but I think it has special significance during the Easter season. Before we begin our class, the second graders and I talk about Jesus’ life, death and resurrection and why the butterfly is an Easter symbol.
The Butterfly is one of the significant symbols of Easter. Its whole life cycle is meant to symbolize the life of Jesus Christ. The first stage is the caterpillar, which stands for His life on Earth. Second phase begins from the cocoon stage, portraying the crucifixion and burial of Jesus. The third and final stage is the butterfly, representing His raising from the dead in a glorified body and peace.
Supplies: 
- Paper lunch bag
- Colored construction paper
- Butterfly wings (Pattern)
- Butterfly head (Pattern)
- Butterfly antennae (Pattern)
- Black marker
- Colored markers
- Scissors
- Glue stick
- Silver glitter glue
Directions:
- Fold the butterfly wings in half, apply glue along the crease and glue to the seamed side of the paper lunch bag.
- With the black marker, decorate the wings and body of the butterfly with circles, squares, triangles, lines, etc. Or use scraps of paper to decorate the wings and body. Remember that both sides should be as symmetrical as possible.
- Color in the wings and front. Add black or colored dashes or dots.
- Glue the antennae to the top back of the head. Glue the head to the bottom (flap) of the paper sack. Add lines or dashes around the outside of the face.
- Make the butterfly sparkle with silver glitter glue.
