I’ve seen different techniques used in a similar project as this, using watercolors instead of the colored chalk to bring out the spider web. Either method will work, it’s mostly a matter of the drying time needed with the watercolors. We’re using colored chalk for this, although I do think the watercolors make for a brighter background.
Supplies:
- 8″ x 8″ white construction paper
- 9″ x 9″ colored construction paper
- Spider body and legs (Pattern)
- 2″ colored Pom-pom
- White glue
- ΒΌ” google eyes
- Glue stick
- White crayon
- Colored chalk
- Kleenex
- Black Sharpie
- Crayons
Directions:
- Cut out the spider body. Fold all the legs straight up and fold the feet in. Now make knees on the legs by folding the legs in half in the opposite direction.
- Folk the head up toward the body and then bend the head in half and back down. Glue the google eyes to the top half of the head.
- With white glue, glue the pom-pom in the center of the body. Set aside to dry.
- Draw a large dot on the white paper with the white crayon. Make lines out from the dot to the edges of the paper. Make large circles around the starting dot—-the spider web.
- Using two or three colors of chalk, wipe over the entire spider web with color. In a circular motion, wipe off the excess chalk with the Kleenex. Wipe off the chalk so you see the spider web.
- Draw three or five leaves on the spider web with the black Sharpie and color them.
- Glue the spider web picture onto a 9″x 9″ piece of colored construction paper.
- Write, “Itsy Bitsy Spider went up the waterspout, Itsy Bitsy Spider came down again”, around the edges of the colored paper with the black Sharpie.
- Glue the prepared spider onto the web. With the glue stick, place a bit of glue under each foot and glue to the paper so the knee is bent.

Oooops!! You’re right. Maybe his hind legs are hiding, getting ready to jump. Anyway that’s my story and I’m stick’n to it!! Thanks for the heads up….. Note to all others doing this project: Please add two legs and make this a happy spider.
FIRST OF ALL, I LOVE YOUR PROJECTS AND WEBSITE. WE HAVE DONE SEVERAL OF YOUR DRAWINGS WITH MY 5 YEAR OLD SON. I WOULD JUST HAVE A QUESTION, DON’T SPIDERS HAVE 8 LEGS?
BEST REGARDS,
